How to make your first pngtuber!
Not everyone has the skills or the budget for a full Live2D vtuber model, when I started vtubing I surely didn’t. But with a PNGtuber you can still add a lot of personality to your streams even with a small (or non-existent) budget!
Before we get started
Okay this tutorial is focused on artists BUT even if you don’t know how to draw you can still make your own pngtuber. Soon I’ll post a tutorial on exactly that so make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss out!
Oh by the way, I’m running a special offer for the Cozy Bakery stream package, everything for 5 USD only for the first 5 customers! We already made some sales so this might be the last change to grab it with this price! Available on Gumroad, ko-fi and Vgen.
What do you need to be a pngtuber?
To be a png or giftuber there are a couple of things you’ll need:
A character design
A couple of png’s or gif’s
A program to make it all happen
Let’s talk about your character …
Vtuber: @weed_tv_
First thing you’ll need is a character you want to turn into a pngtuber. The style really does not matter, it can be a chibi, realistic, anime, anything! It only needs to feel right to you. My only suggestion would be to not be afraid of exaggerating your character, especially the expressions.
Most of the time your pngtuber will be relatively small on your streams so having a clear design really help your audience to connect with you and your content. Take this example:
The style is very cute and simplified but the eyes and mouth are quite big to really show that expression! Having a clear character design with clear facial expressions will help your audience connects to you and to your content.
Now with your character in mind let’s talk about some images!
How to make the pngs/gifs of your pngtuber/giftuber?
So for a very basic pngtuber/giftuber you’ll need only 4 images:
One with the eyes open and the mouth closed, one with both the eyes and mouth open, one with both the eyes and mouth closed and one with the eyes closed and the mouth open. Let’s take png-chan as an example:
This is the basic you’ll need to have your character talking and blinking. If you want to add more expressions you certainly can! Just remember you’ll usually need those 4 variations for it to work.
If you’re making a giftuber you’ll also need those 4 images but they will be grouped in two gifs: One talking and blinking and the other just blinking.

Okay now that you have all of your images and gifs let’s talk about programs!
What is the best pngtubing program?
There are many pngtubing programs in the web and they can be as simple or as complex as you can imagine. Let me list two of my favorites (both of them are free):
One of the simplest and easiest to use programs. The one I started with.
A really complex program that allows you to make your pngtuber more expressive. You can create some really cool effects with this one but if that’s your first time making a pngtuber I suggest you go with something a bit more simple.
Of course there are a lot more pngtubing programs, but I wanted to focus on the ones I already used and I can endorse with confidence. There is no truly "best one”. The best pngtubing program is the one that fits your needs!
If it’s your first time making a vtuber I can’t recommend you enough to start simple and then make it more complex as you go.
I started with a very simple model on veado mini and that’s the program I still use when I want to stream with a cute pngtuber.
And now you should be ready to stream and have fun with your first pngtuber! If you have any questions or suggestions feel free to contact me trough any of my socials (I’m most active on blue sky!)
I hope this has helped you and I hope to see you next week! byeee
